JULIE EVANS - RAD RST AISTD
After a back injury prevented her from pursuing a dancing career, Julie set up Julie Sianne School of Dance (now Julie Sianne Theatre Arts) in 1983. Starting out with just a few pupils in a jazz class it quickly grew as a result of her hard work and talent for teaching a subject that she loves. She entered pupils into Kingston Festival and immediately started winning trophies. More Festivals followed and before long the school had won its first Gold medal at the All England Dance National Finals.
Julie’s reputation as a choreographer is built on countless winning solos, duets, trios and groups. In 2007 Julie was presented with the prestigious Joanne Marsden Blackwell Award for Choreography by Gillian Lynne at the National Finals.
Julie is hugely proud that the school that she started is now widely recognised as one of the foremost dance schools in the country.
JENNIFER HALE - BA (Hons) LRAD AISTD
Jennifer is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dance Degree programme and has been teaching at JSTA since 2004. She is also a tutor for the RAD Certificate in Ballet teaching studies and was appointed to the RAD Board of Examiners as a Grades Examiner in 2006.
ALISON BROWN - AISTD
Alison started her dance training at Julie Sianne Theatre Arts at the age of 8 and then went on to train at Laine Theatre Arts, Epsom. On completing her training she went on to dance in many shows taking her all over the world the most recent of which were Principal Dancer for Spirit of the Dance and Spirit of Broadway in the USA. After such a successful career she is delighted to be teaching where her dancing life began.
AMY MELLORS - BA(Hons), LRAD, ARAD, AISTD
Amy graduated from the Royal Academy of Dance in 2006, with a first class honours degree in the Art and Teaching of Ballet. During this period she also trained with the ISTD gaining her teaching qualifications for Modern and Tap. She currently teaches a range of age groups and styles for various schools in the South East.
RAY FRANKLIN - BA (Hons)
A professional actor with over 25 years experience in the industry, Ray joined the teaching staff in 2005. He teaches all the Drama classes and takes the one-to-one LAMDA lessons.
RICHARD WHENNELL - BMus (Hons)
Richard has been careering around the music world for most of his life. He enjoys every minute of his varied musical existence, from playing jazz in an after-hours session in New Orleans, touring europe with the New York production of Best Of Broadway, to writing, recording and performing music for film, TV, radio and commercial CD release. His pet love is the theatre and relishes any such involvement. Having played for many of the West End and UK touring musicals, Richard very much enjoys working with young people who aspire to a life on the stage, nurturing their skills and enjoyment through his own enthusiasm. Music really is his life.
ZEV CAPLAN - B.Ed Hons PGDip perf (RAM) LRAM Zev is a vocal coach trained at Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music. He is an expert on vocal techniques and has taught at Italia Conti, Mountview, Bodywork, CPA and vocal coached for shows (Barons Court). Zev has students in many West End shows and bands and is also an actor and singer having performed at the Theatre Royal and the Queen's Jubilee.
GUEST TEACHERS
JUNE MITCHELL - MA FRAD
June Mitchell is a dual examiner and tutor of the Royal Academy of Dance. She performed professionally in musicals before eventually embarking on a teaching career. Subsequent teaching posts were in Canada and then Zimbabwe where she was appointed Artistic Director of the Rhodesian National Ballet mounting works for two seasons and touring with a small ballet workshop group performing in the African townships. On return to the UK June began her teaching at the College of the RAD and also at the Royal Ballet School Teachers’ Course. During this time apart from her work with student teachers and touring extensively for the Academy overseas she was also London Scholarship teacher, a member of the Board of Governors of the College of the RAD and Vice -Chair to the Board of Examiners. At present June remains active with full time teaching, examining and adjudicating commitments.
ANTHONY CRANWELL - AISTD
Anthony trained at Laine Theatre Arts graduating with a diploma in Musical Theatre and Associate teaching qualifications with the ISTD. ALISON STUART - ARAD, BSc (Hons) MSc ARAD BSc(Hons) MSc. Alison trained with Julie Rose from the Royal Ballet, at the West Street School of Classical Ballet, Covent Garden and London Studio Centre Classical Graduate Course. She performed with London City Ballet and also worked with Adonais Ballet Company. As well as teaching and choreographing at JSTA she also teaches classes for the Learning Department of English National Ballet and leads other ballet and choreographic workshops for children and adults and teaches adult ballet classes in London.
LAUREN VARNHAM
Lauren began her career at Julie Sianne Theatre Arts at the age of 3, staying right through until she gained a scholarship to continue her training at Laine Theatre Arts, Epsom. She won the Senior and Premier sections of The Janet Cram, and numerous sections at The All England Finals. She joined the JSTA Teaching Staff in 2006. Lauren graduated early from Laine as she was cast in Disney's High School Musical at the Hammersmith Apollo. She has recently finished the UK tour of Carousel and has just finished Hairspray at the Shaftesbury Theatre, London.
JO KILMINSTER
Jo trained at Laine Theatre Arts, Epsom for 3 years where she became a qualified I.S.T.D Tap and Modern teacher and gained Diplomas in Dance and Musical Theatre.
Since graduating Jo has worked as a freelance teacher in many leading dance establishments. She has worked with Stageone Theatre Company, conducted workshops and summer schools.
During her years of teaching and choreographing her pupils have consistently achieved outstanding results in examinations and prestigious competitions, including All England, Janet Cram and Majorie Davis Tap Awards.
Jo spent 8 ½ very happy years at Julie-Sianne Theatre Arts as the tap teacher as well as teaching modern and jazz to the younger end of the school.
Jo is now a member of faculty at Laine Theatre Arts where she teaches tap and jazz to the full time students as well teaching children one evening a week.
Jo is also a guest teacher at Arabesque Performing Arts, Chichester.
EMMA KELLY - BA Hons AISTD
Training: Emma began her training at the age of 5 at Julie Sianne Theatre Arts and then went on to the Guildford School of Acting. Theatre: Independent Woman (New Players Theatre, West End) Covered and played the role of Sophie in Mamma Mia (Prince of Wales Theatre) Suzanne in a one off showcase performance of a new musical The Music Is The Hero (New Players Theatre) Princess in Aladdin (Landor Theatre) The pupil in The Lesson (Kings Head Theatre). As choreographer, Independent Woman (New Players Theatre, West End) ‘the rap’ Achilles In Heels (Landor Theatre) Friday Street (LFS) numerous works for Julie Sianne Theatre Arts. TV/Film: Nurse in Friday Night Project (Channel 4), Rosalyn in In Between (La Toyson D’Or Films). Emma recently played Sharpay Evans in the UK tour of High School Musical and has just finished the Full Monty at The English Speaking Theatre, Frankfurt.
